ALL REGISTRATION FEES MUST BE RECEIVED BY CADS NATIONAL OFFICE BY: FEBRUARY 26, 2010 The winter season is fast approaching after a busy off season. Your Executive and National Board members continue to assist me in working towards improving communications and expanding accessibility opportunities across Canada. Here are a few updates; Website The website continues to be revamped so as to cut down on the clutter, plus make it more user-friendly and available in both French and English versions. Bev Hannington, our Webmaster, continues to work very hard on this difficult task. Please contact her at: webmaster@disabledskiing.ca if you see any errors, or have any concerns. Membership Fees & Cards At the Fall 2008 AGM held in Vancouver a motion was presented to raise the national membership fee portion by $5.00, to a total of $25.00. This was in response to the rising costs associated with running the association, i.e., including increases in insurance, data processing, internet and online services. This motion went back to all Divisions, as well as the National Board, where it was approved. Please contact your Division to review current division membership fees. The CADS membership database and the processing procedure has been revamped this season, with the intention of improving information retention, communications, and the delivery of membership cards in a timely manner. This will be the second year where there will be the option for registering online; the exceptions being DSABC who opted out, and CADS Alberta who continues to process the majority of their memberships from within their division and then send out their own membership cards. This season CADS Membership cards will go out approximately every two weeks. The Newsletter The Perspective in now produced in both English and French. It is your newsletter. Karen Elliott has worked very hard to produce this with the assistance of a very small number of translators. However, this effort does take time and results in it taking a little longer to produce. If you have information, or articles you would like to submit please contact her at: kelliott385@gmail.com Please note that, due to the costs involved, this newsletter is not being mailed out to each member, in accordance with direction received from the CADS National Board. There is, however, every intention of again distributing the newsletter to the full membership once funding can be re-established. In the meantime, limited hardcopies of the newsletter are printed, so if you would like one, please contact the Nation Office. 2009 – 2010 CADS National Award Nominations Once this new season has gotten into full swing you will again be able to make nominations online through the CADS website. Please consider making a nomination and remember that the Review Committee appreciates both legibility and details when looking at the nominations. CADS Festival 2010 at Mt. Washington, BC. To recap, here are the key points: For people wanting the opportunity to make a charitable donation in honour of the memory of a family member or friend, the “In Memoriam” kits help make the memorial donation process as easy and as seamless as possible during a very stressful time. The “In Memoriam” Fundraiser initiative is a 50/50 partnership between CADS National and the local clubs and programs at the grass roots level. All revenues will be shared equally. “In Memoriam” kits, contains 25 envelopes, a CADS Brochure and a sheet of self explanatory donation options. Kits are available through the coordinator / administrator at all local CADS Volunteer Programs in Canada. “In Memoriam” kits are also available from Henry Wohler, Project Coordinator, at 514-425-8894 or 514-232-6676 or by email at hwohler@yahoo.com. “In Memoriam” donations to honour the memory of a loved one can still be made at any time “on line” by visiting the CADS website at www.disabledskiing.ca and clicking on “DONATIONS”. A Moment For Reflection On Why We Do What We Do I have been teaching disabled skiers and instructors for over 13 years and have had many accolades thrown my way and lots of Thank Yous and small signs of appreciation, but the following story is the highlight of my career. I now teach at Ski Timber Ridge, which is a small ski hill in north central Saskatchewan.  The school groups that come our way began bringing their "disabled students" once they heard that I was available to work with some of the kids.  Last season an autistic boy was part of that group. He was a real go getter but very non communicative. He did lots of screaming and hollering, and was easily distracted or not interested, at times. We worked together three times during the season. As it turns out, this boy was my Cousin’s grandson, so I had a bit of a tie to him. We crossed tracks over the summer and I would always say something to him about skiing. He never really answered me, but his Mom said he talked about it. When the new season rolls around, he again comes out to the hill with his school group. He is in grade one. I was told he had been playing some hockey this season, but was not too well focused during the practises or games. I expected that we would continue on same as last year and struggle at best to get through a lesson. His Mom informed me that his Dad had taken him to the top of the hill the previous week. (We had never progressed past the bunny hill).  We went over to the bunny hill with all the other kids, where he participated in the drills and seemed to be communicating so much better. The area only has a T Bar, so when it is time for students to progress to "The Big Hill" we usually take the little ones up, one at a time. When I decided to take some of the kids that were ready, up the hill, this little guy jumped to the front of the line and was almost demanding to go too. So I thought "What the heck, come on, lets go". Well, when we were riding up the T Bar, he was talking up a storm. And then he said it…….his words were "You know what?"  I asked, "What", and he said to me in the most sincere and kind way a young 7 year old child can.  "You are the best instructor in the whole world!"    Well, I had to fight back the tears, and I realized immediately that this is why I do what I do.   Brian Brownfield CADS 3, CSIA 2, CASI 1 Ski Timber Ridge Big River, Sask. This marks the fifth publication that I have produced since volunteering to take on the role of editor / publisher in the fall of 2007. I hope that you find it informative and interesting. As I have indicated in previous articles, this newsletter is evolving and will continue to evolve in response to the needs of our organization. At this point in time, it is very much still a work in progress. As is often the case after a summer hiatus, there have been some challenges associated with putting together this issue of the newsletter. When I put on my hat as Editor /Publisher I act as the facilitator ~ the person behind the written pages, the person that puts it all together collectively on paper. I am, therefore, dependent upon many other people to make this newsletter a reality. I rely on CADS members from across Canada for submissions. I was asked to set an earlier fall publication date this year; one that would be considerably earlier than that of previous years so that updates about pre-courses, various topics of concern to CADS members, and Festival information (i.e., pricing and forms) would be available as early as possible. After careful consideration and discussion with those involved, an October 15th publication date was chosen, one that appeared, at that time, to be feasible. While our intentions were good, it became apparent towards the latter part of September, that we could not meet that publication date. Some of the information required for updates would not be available in sufficient time because it was dependent upon third parties, and was not forthcoming. Also, since CADS is a dynamic volunteer-based organization, some discussions at the executive level necessitated revisions / updates to some of the articles originally submitted. That being said, as you can see this publication is now out, albeit a little later. In this issue you will find information on a variety of subjects including: pre-courses, the website, CADS memberships, letters to the editor, TechSoup Canada’s Technology Donation Program, the In Memoriam project, and Festival 2010. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took the time and effort to contribute to this newsletter. All submissions are greatly appreciated. Also, before I close, I would like to express my gratitude and sincere thanks to Marylene Lefebvre for French language translation assistance in this issue. A French version would not be possible without the time and effort of our volunteer translators. Additional volunteers, to provide assistance with translation work, are always needed and appreciated. A lot of work goes into making this publication a reality. Just think ….. everything you see in this issue relies on people like you! Until next time ~ K. Hi; My name is Sarah White, and I attended the C.A.D.S festival in British Colombia this year. I am 13 years old. I also play other sports, such as wheelchair racing, hockey and swimming. I had an awesome time skiing at Sun Peaks! It was truly and honestly a great experience. Everyone there, with no exceptions, was kind and generous, I felt like a princess. I also met hilarious friends who I keep in touch with and who I will never forget. I got a chance to meet some of the top skiers in Canada! I improved a lot on my skiing and learned simple tricks that made all the difference in the world. I think it's great that so many people gave so much of their time and energy to help. Without them, there wouldn't even be a festival! I met the President of C.A.D.S, who I also skied with a lot that week. He and my Dad became very close friends and he's a great guy. My skiing instructor was Peter Lawson, from SilverStar. He taught me so much in a short period of time I was amazed. I even got compliments from a professional skier on the Quebec ski team! I also got to celebrate my Dad's birthday in British Colombia. Not very many kids from Quebec get to do that. While I was at Sun Peaks, I skied in so much powder!! I've never seen anything like it. I skied a few black diamonds (almost killed myself, but it was so cool). I didn't know I could ski that fast! I have never skied so much in my life, so by the end of the day I was pretty exhausted, but it was a good feeling. For the first time, I tried a mono ski. It's a completely different feel but I'm getting used to it. Now that I have tried it, I'm never going back to a bi-ski! Thank you so much, I had the time of my life! Sarah Letter from a 2009 Festival Participant Excerpts from a letter post CADS Festival 09: NEWS UPDATE: It is that time of year again. We start to put away the summer toys and bring out the winter ones. We tune the skis that we forgot to take care of at the end of last season. And for some of us, it’s time to check out last season’s ski suit to see if has somehow mysteriously shrunk, over the summer, while hanging in the closet. It also means that some of us will even start that fitness program that we talked about much earlier in the year. At CADS, your Board of Directors has been busy working on a number of initiatives; namely the online membership program, the newsletter and the web site. As everyone is aware, there are many changes happening in the world around us; some of which affect CADS directly, i.e., sponsorship and insurance, to name just a couple. We recognize that we need to be able to respond appropriately to these changing situations. To that end, the Strategic Planning Committee has been working hard at mapping out the future of the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing. At this time, this planning initiative is still a work in progress. On another note, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jerry Johnston on receiving the Paralympic Order for 2009. Jerry was the Founder of the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing. Sincerely, Al Message from Al Matile, President
